Steven Thomas Hanes was born to Clifford and Anna Hanes in Pierce City, Missouri, on May 28, 1934, and passed peacefully in his home at the age of 90, on November 7, 2024. He is survived by his beloved wife, Wilma, of 49 years, and their three children: Louanna Burcham and her husband Brent, Joshua Hanes and his wife Nita, and Matthew Hanes and his wife Jessica. He was a proud Boompa to seven grandchildren: Austin, Ariel, and Iyla Burcham, Hunter and Easton Hanes, and Mason and Seneca Hanes. From his first marriage, he is also survived by his son, David Hanes.
Steve served in the United States Navy for 27 years, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. During his distinguished service, he completed three tours in Vietnam and was honored with multiple awards, including the U.S. Air Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Navy Unit Commendation.
Upon retiring from the Navy, Steve and Wilma settled in Stella, Missouri, where they raised their three children. Together, they enjoyed a peaceful life, raising cattle and embracing the quiet rhythm of rural living.
One of his favorite sayings was, “I’ve been everywhere, I’ve seen and done everything.” But everything changed when they had children. His focus shifted to family, and retirement became a time to enjoy a simple life. Although a quiet man by nature, he was always present at every sporting event or activity in which his children and grandchildren participated, cheering them on with unmistakable pride.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held for family and friends at Macedonia Cemetery in Stella, Missouri, on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Society or Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society in Steve’s honor. Arrangements are under the direction of Ozark Memorial Park of Joplin, MO.
