Marla was born to Mary (Young) Phillips and Ezra Phillips February 24, 1952, at Providence Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas, Wyandotte County. She returned to the Lord on April 10, 2024, at the Solace House Joplin Missouri.
Preceding her in death are, Mary & Ezra Phillips (Parents). Sisters, Glenda (Goodman) Phillips, Barbara (Burton) Phillips and Fayetta Phillips.
Marla is survived by her brothers: William Phillips (Darlene), Michael Phillips (Suzy) and James Phillips (Diane).
Marla was united in marriage to Michael Dwain Smotherman Sr. September 20,1969 at Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kansas. To this union, six (6) beautiful children were born:
Michael Smotherman Jr. (Regina)
Amy (Teeter) Smotherman (Michael)
Amos Smotherman (Whitney)
Andy Smotherman (Lindsey)
LeighAnn Smotherman (Donovan)
Jacob Smotherman (Emily).
Marla has 14 beautiful Grandchildren and 2 beautiful Great-Grandchildren.
All being the Love and Pride of her Life.
Throughout her working career, Marla has always felt blessed to have a good mentor; one that would guide, teach and promote her in her career in Food Service.
She retired from Imperial on December 26, 2023. Giving her service for 18 years. She always said, you cannot call it “going to work” when you enjoy the duties of the company and having great co-workers.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Joplin Family Worship Center in Joplin, MO. In lieu of flowers, Marla requested donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
